How do I protect PPT presentations?

When I go into Tools, Options, Security tab the upper half of the window is
'greyed out' preventing me from entering a password to 'open' and 'modify'

Can someone please explain to a novice how to activate the password options,
possibly by changing the settings?

Assuming you have 2002/2003 (always good to say!) In tools options you
probably have "disable new features" > password / set. Unset and all should
be well. Note though that earlier versions won't open passworded
presentations at all.
