We were handed a 70-pg pleading and instructed to IMMEDIATELY create TOC; the entire document was created in Normal style (by the attorney). What would have been a quick way to create the TOC automatically?

creating TOC requires either "title 1 to Tile 6 paragraphs or numbered paragraphs alternatively you can set the parts of text you want to use as titles to bold or italics and then use the paragraph 'normal + bold' as only level of titles if you have any of those in your document you can use the 'references' menu and ask for a summary , then specify the name of the paragraphs you want to use then click OK and the toc will be created where you ar pointed with the text srsor

IF there are section headings/titles that the attorney wrote in the body of the document, just assign a heading style (1-?) and then generate the TOC. The way to generate a TOC is to go to the References menu, select the Table of Contents drop-down, and select an automatic table style option.

After you've assigned the heading styles but BEFORE you generate the TOC, place the cursor where you want the TOC generated. It will place the TOC from that point forward. You may have to place page breaks before and after the TOC.

Nonsense is all I can say to that.

The simplest approach is to apply suitable Heading Styles to the heading paragraphs, then insert a Table of Contents (TOC) field.
