How do I recognize a mobile browser?

I want to automatically direct web visitors to a small mobile-friendly screen
if they are using a mobile device (cell phone, etc.) I know that I can tell a
lot about my web visitor by using the Server Variables. And I'm pretty sure
that HTTP_USER_AGENT will tell me if he/she is using a mobile device. What
exactly should I look for?
