How do I recover a text document converted into question marks?

I am in a world of confusion. I was working in Word 2003 on Windows XP and
was saving my document at intervals on my Verbatim Store 'n' Go Drive. The
document was 13 pages long and hardly any space used yet on my drive. Went to
save it for the last time before printing. A message flashed on screen, I was
not able to view it before hitting the wrong button. It would not let me save
to my drive. My HP Pavilion Laptop has a program on it for rescuing
documents. Upon pulling up my rescued document, I discoverd all 13 pages,
however all of my text has been turned into 13 pages of question marks,
except for on the last page it has my page number of 13. This has floored me
as this was a project due for college that has taken me 4 solid days and
nights to complete! How do I recover/reconvert my document? Is there a
solution? This was due on monday, November 10th. Please, Someone Help ME!!!

Never save a document directly to removable media. It sounds like your file
may be corrupt. If you have a paper copy of it, scan it in with OCR software
and start proof-reading it.
