How do I recover Word when not responding every time it is open?

Whenever I try to open word, it gets stuck trying to recover an old document
and then doesn't respond. I've tried restarting and shutting down my computer
to no avail. I basically cannot use word right now. Any suggestions on how
"re-boot" word? I have Word 2007.
