How do I reduce the size of my desktop?

Actually I'm not sure how to ask this question. My system was recently
updated to Windows XP and with Word upgrading to 2002 SP3. The look of the
windows and icons increased in size so that whenever I need to see something
near the bottom of the screen I have to use the scroll bar (this also happens
when I'm on the internet). Is this something built into the program or is
there something I can do without going through the IT Department to remedy?

This seems like an OS setting, contact your IT department, should be an easy
fix.
