how do I reduce the size of the tabs in a document?

When I cut & paste data from some documents (Lotus Notes), the tab spacing is
much larger than the original, which makes it difficult to read. Can I
reduce the size of these to alleviate this problem?

Do you mean that inside the same paragraph you have TAB separated text? In
OneNote this construct is called nested headings and the width of the columns
can be adjusted like this:
Suppose you have "Hello<TAB>World" nested heading. Hover over "World" so
blue arrowhead handle shows to the left of it. Right-click on the handle and
from the bottom of the context menu choose "Resize Previous Column". Drag the
highlighted handle to resize. This will affect _all_ nested headings in the
same container.
