How do I reformat my hard drive with XP home

My operating system will not allow me to reformat my hard drive. I
reinstalled my windows XP program because I start to have problem with my
system. The system repartition hard drive and hid all my files. None of my
programs are working correctly. I am not computer literate and need a step by
step example to do this type of task. Please help
