How do I remove a resource from a pick list?

S

Stuart

I have copied some tasks from a different project file into the file I am
working on.

When I want to add a resource to a task, I get a drop down list. This list
includes a resource not relevant to this file. I want to remove that from the
drop down list - any ideas how?

e.g.
Hit the drop down button in the task's resource:
jim
fred
paul

Paul is not relevant - I don't want him showing at all in this document.

This doesn't stop me working - I can still type a resource into the cell.
But I want to remove the resource from this project altogether.

Stuart,

The list of resources is populated from the resources available on the
Resource Sheet.
On the menu, click View => Resource Sheet.
You can delete Paul (make sure to delete the entire line) from this view.

In addition, I would like to point out some bad practices you are using.
- Be very careful when copy-pasting entire tasks. In most cases, this is
a bad practice. And I would say, never copy paste tasks from one project
file into another! (all task details are copied, not just the name)
- I looks like you are using the Resource Names column to assign
resources. You better start using the Assign Resources button to assign
resources. This gives you more control over your assignments, which
should result in a better project schedule.

I hope this helps.

Hi Hans,

Thanks for the reply, which worked.

You mention -
- I looks like you are using the Resource Names column to assign
resources. You better start using the Assign Resources button to assign
resources. This gives you more control over your assignments, which
should result in a better project schedule.

Why is this? I do use that column to enter the resource names and was
wondering what the benefit is doing it in the way you suggest.

Thanks.

When using the Resource Names column, you have almost no control over
your schedule. In a project schedule, every assignment is controlled by
the formula D*U=W.
In the Resource Names column, you can only specify the resource name,
and Microsoft Project will use defaults for Units to calculate Work,
depending on the task type.

Using the Assign Resources window (or the Task Entry view), you can
specify the Resource Units or Work to fully control your assignments.
In addition, in the Assign Resources window you can easily select
multiple resources, define different units for each resource, remove
resource assignments etc.

That's why I recommend everyone to not use the resource names column.

I hope this helps,
Hans
