Big Ed

when opening Office Button in upper left of screen, all previous docs appear.

This requires a Registry edit and exactly which key it is that you need to
delete is not straightforward but there's a fairly comprehensive article at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/161631.
This article is for Word 97 and there's no indication that there are
versions of the article for other versions of Word, but if you substitute the
number of your Word version in the Registry keys given, you should be able to
use the same information.
The key given for the Save As dialog is:
My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Common
OpenFind\Microsoft Word\Settings\Save As\File Name MRU;
Instead of 8.0, you would substitute 12.0 for Word 2007, 11.0 for Word 2003,
and so on backwards.

Hope these help

Big Ed: In 2003 and prior Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen used to bring up a horizontal bar
which will remove a listed item.
Not sure if this works in 2007, can you test and come back?
Many thanks

Deleting *all* of the recent documents is easy: in Office button | Word
Options, Advanced category, choose zero for "Show this number of Recent
Documents" and click OK. To start listing recent documents again, go back
into the dialog box and change to a different number than zero.

Hi Big Ed,

Since you mentioned the Button, I assume that you are interested in how to
do this in Word 2007. You can remove all the files that no longer exist from
the list. To do this, click the Office Button, click Word Options, click
Advanced, go about half-way down the list of options, set the number in the
Display this number of recent documents option to 0, and click OK. At this
point the list will be empty. Then go back and set the number to its previous
value or to another number that you prefer, click OK, and click the Button
again. The files that still exist will be restored to the list.

If you want to list empty the list completely, follow the same procedure,
but close Word before you click the button the last time to see the restored
list. You can also empty the last n files in the list by setting the number
to the current number minus n instead of 0.

Then go back and set the number to its previous
value or to another number that you prefer, click OK, and click the Button
again. The files that still exist will be restored to the list.

This is a refinement I would not have expected. I'm loath to try it, so I'll
take your word for it, but it sounds like an alarmingly intelligent
improvement!

Hmm, as far as I can tell, setting the number to zero deletes all entries,
no matter if you restart Word or not.

Thanks for confirming my hunch. You're saying that if you set the number to
zero, OK, then go back and set it to some larger number, OK, there are still
no files listed until they are added in the usual way (by opening them)?
