How do I remove the dots between words?

According to Word Help, it's a formatting mark. I tried to remove it by
clicking the button on the toolbar, but nothing happened. Now every document
I open gets reformatted to include all the dots. Can anyone help?

On the View tab of Tools | Options, clear all the check boxes under
"Formatting marks."
