how do I remove unread mail notification from welcome screen

I am using XP professional with office 2003 professional. I am getting unread
mail notification at my account name at the welcome screen. The notification
is displaying I have unread messages even after I have read all my messages.
How can I turn this display off or stop it displaying unread messages when I
have none?
