how do i remove unwanted characters in my word document such as a

[VB]

I am a new user to Word 2007 and the program tries to (and succeeds in some
cases) to insert a heavy black line at various parts of the document
particularly when there is a hard carriage return, what do I do to remove it?
Please help! thanks
