how do i repair damaged word document which shows stars?

I have word document that is safed in external drive. it content my research
and due to accidetly removly of the external driv from the computer the
word had a serious error in which the wording letters ( 9970 words) has been
changed to stars. So I would be very gratful if you can solve the problem for
me. please as soon as you can it is very improtant document.

NEVER save a document directly to any removable drive. ALWAYS save documents
to the local hard drive and then COPY the document to the removable media.
