How do I replace the missing.msp files that Office Update Installe

M

While doing an Office Update I received this message: "Office Update is
unable to check for updates". The problems listed the following as possible
reasons for the problem:

1. Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation
completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If
the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.

2. You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows
Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information
see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source if
Unavailable.

I believe that item "1" is the problem because I checked for the .msp files
in the Windows Installer directory and they are missing. How can I correct
and expedite this in the most efficient and quick way? Any help is greatly
appreciated.

Thanks & God Bless,
MissionaryMan

MissionaryMan,
The quickest and most efficient way to restore your missing installation
files is to have your Office installation cd (s) at hand, then have a look at
this tool:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;825933
To date, this seems the only solution for the problem described if the local
installation files have been deleted or not cached at Office setup.

Thank you Chris. I forgot to mention that I'm using Office 2000 Pro, not
2003. But, I'm following your lead and searching for the answer... :) This
has been a real hair puller since my nephew deleted all of my
C:\Windows\Installer files. He was doing me a big favor of "freeing up
space". He's a college student. I told him if he was in need of free space,
he might check between his ears... :) God Bless Ya Chris and Thank you for
any and all help. Jeff Stiles
