How do I resolve download problems for Office 2003 SP1?

I'm trying to install SP1 for Office 2003 but keep running into difficulties.
The "check for updates" screen periodically comes up with the standard error
message stating that it cannot check for updates but I have not had a
response from MS as to why this happens. I therefore downloaded SP1 directly
but it fails on on the install - happily sends MS an error report - and
leaves me back where I started! I need the upgrade primarily for InfoPath.
My laptop upgraded without problem - has anyone any ideas? Thanks!

Thanks Chris

Have tried the options. When I try to repair Office 2003 I get an error
message stating "the patch package could not be opened". Other Office
programmes "repaired" ok. Any thoughts?

Hi Chris

I downloaded the Cleanup Utility and reinstalled Office (2003 Pro) but the
check for downloads page still returns an error. I have now been able to
download & install SP1 so it has cleared the "patch" error but I would still
like to be able to resolve the "check for downloads" error for future
updates. Thanks for pointing me to the relevant articles for the SP1 install!

Hi Chris

I tried that - no luck but ...... I then searched through the other
questions on this site (obviously lots more frustrated people with the same
problem/s) and have found the solution in a combination of responses.
Basically I needed to uninstall all my office products, delete numerous
registry entries, and reinstall the Office Products, ensuring that Office was
installed before other products (such as Visio, OneNote, InfoPath). It was
not a simple solution (and I was not happy about editing the registry) but it
has worked. What is annoying is that Microsoft are not really addressing the
problem in that they are not providing an easily accessible solution. I am
posting the solution as a separate message in the hope that it may be useful
to all those other unhappy people out there. Thanks for all your help Chris
- much appreciated!
Kind regards
Christine

ChristineB,
That actually, is what we do to a degree for our customers to save time
(labor charges), backup all information and settings, do a clean install of
Windows and Office, then update accordingly. Glad your backup and running.
