How do I restore my icons to desktop - folder options won't open

Kids were using MSN last night.
All desktop icons have disappeared.
Not in recycle bin. Listed under desktop on explorer.
Tried to see if hidden under folder options in control panel but it won't
open.
I have limited knowledge but have done the best possible through help but
have exhausted all possibilities.
Is there a clever person out there who can hel.

Right click on Desktop->Arrange Desktop Icons->Show Desktop Icons.
