How do I retrieve Office when accidentally deleted?

A

Avanderh

I was erasing what I thought were temporary internet files to free up space,
when I must have erased something that allowed OFFICE to run, because when I
restarted my computer, all of the shortcuts for Office were gone from my
desktop. I went on a search for them, and I found them, but when I click on
them it says that it is not installed or something to that effect! I dont
know what I could have possibly deleted, but is there anyway to retrieve
OFFICE without me having to buy the software? Office came on my computer when
I bought it. No onw seems to have any answers who I have contacted. WORD,
EXCEL, ONENOTE, POWERPOINT...there all GONE!

First, I would try opening Windows Explorer and undeleting everything that's
in the Recycle Bin. Does that bring Office back to life?

Failing that, I woud cross my fingers, and in the Control Panel, Add or
Remove Programs, open the Office items, and see if I could get it as far as
the Repair option. Many OEMs have Office's installation .cab files stored
(sometimes in hidden directories) on the hard drive. It's possible that all
is not lost.

It's REAL difficult to delete Office. Just because shortcuts are gone,
doesn't mean the programs are. Have you tried double-clicking on a Word
document to see if it opens?

Of course I have tried double-clicking on Word documents to see if they would
open, and it does not work. Any other advise? I obviously deleted something,
because It doesnt work, although when i do a search I can find it, but it
does not work. Smeone advised me to go to the control panel and try the
repair option? How exactly do I get to the "repair option"?

I know that asking you if you tried double clicking seemed like a dumb
question but unfortunately we have no idea what you have tried, haven't
tried, or what your skill level is. I'd rather assume nothing. There's no
insult intended.

One more question. Saying "doesn't work" is like telling your doctor you are
sick. We need a few more details.

Did you try going to the Control Panel? Select Office and hit the Change
button. You WILL need the CD for this.

Ok, to reiterate, when i accidentally erased something that obviously allowed
Office to run, I restarted my computer and the first thing i noticed was that
the shortcuts were gone. I then went into MY DOCUMENTS, and saw that all of
the Word documents were now labeled .DOC, or either .WPS^. When i would
double click on one of the Word documents, it would ask me what program I
want to open it with. I am assuming that my computer no longer has Word, or
doesnt recognize the program. My next step was to see if I could find one of
the Office programs by searching for it. I clicked on START, went to SEARCH,
then under ALL FILES AND FOLDERS, typed in WORD, or OFFICE. A folder came up
for WORD and OFFICE. When i clicked on them, a screen popped up that had the
icons for WORD, POWERPOINT, ONENOTE, EXCEL...When i double-clicked on those,
it said that it is not currently installed on my computer. So i see the
icons, but something is missing in order to make it run. If anyone has an
ANSWER, or SUGGESTION ,please respond. ALSO to reiterate, OFFICE CAME ON MY
COMPUTER..i DO NOT HAVE THE CD. Once again, is there anyway i can retrieve
office WITHOUT PURCHASING THE SOFTWARE?? When i say it doesnt work, it doesnt
work, its not working; I have no access to Word or the other Office
applications as I specified.

Since Office was preinstalled on your computer, it is probably located in a
hidden partition. Call your computer's manufacturer and the can walk you
thru the steps to reinstall it.
