How do I rotate a slide from the "Draw" menu in PowerPoint?

In PowerPoint, I selected a slide to rotate, went to the "Draw" toolbar
icon, then clicked "rotate or flip"; the choices, including the one I wanted,
remained "dim" and couldn't be activated. What now?

Slides must be either Portrait or Landscape in the same file. You cannot
rotate a slide itself. However, check out the following for workarounds:
