Office 97 should run fine in XP with any/all Win XP service packs installed.

The license issue for Access in Office 97 is a known issue. Uninstall the
software and go to the fonts folder in Windows. Rename the font Hatten.ttf
to hatten.xxx and reboot the computer. Reinstall Office 97 and then SP1 and
SP2b. Go back to the Fonts folder and rename Hatten.xxx back to Hatten.ttf.
Your problem should be resolved

Post back if it doesn't fix the problem.

Thank you for your help. Much appreciated however -
I am using Office Pro 97. I cannot uninstall individual programmes. I tried
to uninstall Access but cannot. I tried to uninstall the whole programme,
Office Pro. All that happens is the system tries to finish installing it but
does not complete.
Excell is running fine, Word is not installed (but I can live without it)
Access seems to be installed but will not run.
Thanks ever so for your help.

When I mentioned "uninstall the software" I meant the entire Office 97
package. Do the trick, with the font and then reinstall the entire package.
This should get all working for you.

I run 97 Pro (both the academic version, site licensed, and individual
license versions) on a number of different machines with XP Home and Pro on
them. I even run Office 97 side-by-side with Office 2000, Office XP and
Office 2003 on the same machine at the same time with no problem.

Again thank you for your help. I am sure I will get there eventually.
I do not have a font Hatten ttf. to change. There is a font
Haettenschweiler, and under properties this says Hatten.(not Hatten ttf).
There is no option to change anything. Only delete or open. Can I simply
delete Haettenschweiler?
Also the SP1 and SP2b you refer to, is this microsoft SP ? Do I download
these? I have already downloaded SP2. I did not see any ref to SP1 or SP2b.
Thanks ever so for your help.

1. Open Windows Explorer. Click on Tools, then folder options, then view
tab. About 2/3 way down in window you will see a box checked with the words
Hide file extensions for known file types. Turn off the checkmark and then
click apply. (This turns on the extension view capabilities of Windows
Explorer.) Next click OK. To to the Windows folder on the C: drive and
then to the Fonts folder in Windows folder. Click on View then click on
details in the drop down list. Scroll down the list until you see the
Haettenschweiler name and to the right of it you will see hatten.ttf. Click
on the true filename (hatten.ttf) Click and drag (hold the left mouse
button down while moving the mouse cursor to the new location then release
the mouse button where you want the file to be placed) the file to some
place on the hard drive (the Windows folder would be OK but when I tried
this out I placed it in the Windows\temp folder.) (You could also copy the
file then deleting it from the original location.)

2. Once the file has been removed from the C:\windows\fonts folder proceed
with the installation of the Office 97 program and its service packs. You
should install Office 97 first and then SP1 (if it isn't part of the
original installation disk) and then SP2b in that order. These SPs are for
Office 97 only. When SP2b asks for the Product ID you can get it by
starting the Word program and then clicking on Help/About and writing down
the number (will be 5 numbers then 3 numbers or OEM then 7 numbers then 5
numbers separated by hyphens.) After you write down the ID number click OK
then close Word before hitting the OK on the entry point for the ID
otherwise the SP install will tell you that you have to close Office before
continuing.

The two service packs can be downloaded here:

For SP 1 go here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...0B-4DA8-4FB2-80E4-CCFB8D3C1D0B&displaylang=en

For SP2b go here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...42-602E-42B0-89D2-6BE39F1167C1&displaylang=en

Now that Office 97 is installed (I hope) you can reinstall the font removed
earlier. Open Windows Explorer again. Go again to the Fonts folder under
Windows. Click File then Install New Font in the dropdown. In the bottom
left window of the Add Fonts window double click on the location you moved
or copied the hatten.ttf file to. After a few seconds you should see the
Haettenschweiler file. Click on the name and then click on OK. The file
will be installed in Windows again.

Hope all goes well and write back if more help is needed.

Thank you ever so for clear information. I have done everything I have made
some progress but still not quite. Office Pro 97 has now installed and all
components seem Ok. Problem is
Access. It will open up but I get a message ' you can't save the output data
to a file in this format until you correct the setting in the registry.
Reinstall Access or correct the Registry yourself '. I have reinstalled
Office Pro but it has not changed.
When I run Access I get strange colours on my start button and Bar.
Thank you so much for your help.

The last suggestion I have for you is to totally uninstall Office using the
setup program on the CD. Once it is uninstalled, rename the hatten font
again to a different name. Delete the folder where MS Office is stored on
the hard drive. Check the registry for occurances of Office, MSAccess.exe,
etc and remove them (back up the registry first) and then reinstall Office.
Restore the font file.

I am not trying to leave you out in the cold but I don't know what else to
tell you to do. The changing of colors on the start button and bar seem
strange to me. Obviously something is corrupted but without actually seeing
the machine in person I don't know what would be causing this.

You may try to post the question on the following NGs also:
microsoft.public.access.gettingstarted or
microsoft.public.access.setupconfig

Thank you very much for all your help - things now seem to be OK. I am not
convinced Access is absolutely right but things seem to OK. So thanks ever
so, much appreciated.
