An error message appears stating "An Office Assistant character files present
on the system. Please run Setup in maintenance mode and install at least one
character"

This error appears each time I open a new document in Word, Excel and
PowerPoint.

Hi Kangaroo,

Office has two 'modes' for setup.

1. 'New Install'. Basically Office isn't on your System yet.

2. 'Maintenance'. Office is installed but you want to change, repair, remove, replace, update a feature. All of these are
'maintenance' actions.

If Office/Word is listed in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel and you use 'Change' you're in maintenance mode. If
you use the Office CD/DVD and run Setup.exe from there, the first thing the installer does is look at your system to see if Word is
already installed. If so, it jumps to the 'Maintenance' (change me) Window.

You didn't mention the version of Office you're using but you may want to follow the links in the References part of this article
for the one(s) that apply.

Just remove the animated characters.

Here's how:

1. Quit all programs.
2. Do one of the following:
* If you are using Microsoft Windows 2000, double-click the
Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel.
* If you are using Microsoft Windows XP, click Add or Remove
Programs in Control Panel.
3. In the Currently installed programs box, click the listing for Office
or your Microsoft Office program, and then click Change.
4. In the Maintenance Mode Options Setup dialog box, select the Add or
Remove Features option, and then click Next.
5. In the Custom Setup Setup dialog box, select the Choose advanced
customization of applications check box, and then click Next.
6. In the Advanced Customization Setup dialog box, click the expand
indicator (+) next to Office Shared Features.
7. Click the arrow next to Office Assistant, and then click Not Available.
