How do i safe my work on my CD-DVD- RW drive?

Can anyone please tell me how i can safe my work on my DVD-RW drive? I run a WINDOW XP application system, when i tried to safe my work on the new DVD-R disk i just picked up i get "The request cannot be performed due to i/o device error". What do i need to do to correct this problem?

If your saving Word documents just select all of your
Word documents, right click and choose send to DVD-RW
drive plus make sure a DVD-RW DVD is in the drive.
