how do I save a wps document in word

I cannot read a works document which was sent as an attachment. I installed
a filter for works so I could open it with Word but although I can see page
numbers the text is in computer language (Ãà ࡱ á > þÿ). The sender
cannot save as Word, neither can I, there are no options in the 'save as
type' only 'all files'. I am running Windows XP with Office 2000.

Ask the sender to save the file as a Rich Text Format (.rtf) file. Both Word
and Works can "save as" and open .rtf files.

Sender says he has no drop down box save or save as, he is a very new user.
I think the problem is with my office set-up since I have no 'save as type'
other than 'all files'
