How do I Save from MHTML .mht to HTML format only

C

Cherrie

Hi,
I created my first web page in Pub 2000. Uploaded it to my web host.

Later I upgraded to Pub 2007 and made revisions. When I went to upload the
revision I discovered that my web host will ONLY accept HTML extensions and I
am unable to save my page as HTML only. The host will not accept MHTML or
files with .mht extensions.

Someone told me "Look for the Save as type, "Web Page, Filtered (*.htm;
*.html)" but this saves as MHTML as does saving as Single File Web Page. I
was also told "You will only see the parenthetical if Windows is configured
to show file extensions. But the right thing will happen if you choose Web
Page, Filtered. The extension will default to one of htm or html if you don’t
specify an extension. If you really want one specific extension of these two,
then type that in as part of the file name."

So, I am running Windows Vista, MS Publisher 2007 and the parenthetical
(*.htm; *.html) does not appear with saving as filtered web page, and it
saves it as MHTML with .mht extension that my host will not recogize.

I'm not super techy. Can somebody who KNOWS, walk me through the steps on
how to bypass this and actually save as HTM or HTML? MS Pub 2000 had this
option right in the pull-down menu...2007 does not. Thanks!

First of all, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Folder Option > View
tab and scroll down and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types". Ok
out. This will allow you to see the file extensions.

When you generated your web pages with Pub 2000 you did a file save as. In
2007, you can still do that, but perhaps try the more common method. File >
Publish to the Web. In the dialog make sure the file name is index.htm and
direct your output to a folder on your hard drive where you can find it. You
can use index.html but it should be easier to use the default .htm
extension. In Publisher 2000 you automatically were given a "Publish" folder
when you did your File Save as a Web page, but in 2007 you create your own
folder. When you have saved your files to that folder, open it with Windows
Explorer or My Computer. I prefer WE and detail view so I can easily see all
the files and file sizes. You should see an index.htm file and an
index_files folder that contain your other pages and all the supporting
graphics and images.

Unless you specify a File > Save as .mhtm. or .mht file, you should not be
seeing that extension. Nor should you generally be uploading a .mht file to
your host...save that option for perhaps emailing a single web page
containing the graphics to someone.

You can now upload the index.htm file and the index_files folder to your
webhost.

Hi David,
Thanks for your response. Your instructions were very clear and I really
appreciate that. After following your instructions, I uploaded the index.htm
file using FileZilla. Upload was successful. However, when I entered the
URL to go to view it in real time, it showed a parent directory (the home
page of the web hoster), and the Index.htm file as links rather than
automatically opening to my web page as the other (2000) file did. If I
double clicked the link, it opened into a partial web page, mostly black and
white text, no graphics, and text was overlapping...formatting all messed up.
So something is missing, and something about the way it is being read at the
other end is not right.

My internet provider (local) www.eoni.com provides what they call free
space of posting web pages or storing files. This free space will only
accept html files. Something still isn't translating correctly. Yet the
2000 version (which of course is no longer installed) loaded and opened and
was formatted fine.

When I opened the file to preview it before uploading, everything looked fine.

Any other ideas?

Thank you so much,
Cherrie

Cherrie,

The fact that you are seeing the index.htm file suggests one of several
things. I see from the instructions at you webhost:
http://home.eoni.com/supportFTP.cfm that you need to upload your files to
the Public_html folder. As you have been successful in uploading Pub 2000
web pages before, I would hope that you would know that, but be sure to
confirm that you uploaded your files to the correct folder on your host.

I also notice that your host says you have to use the .html extension for
your index file. Generally index.htm and index.html are equivalent, and this
should not matter. However, if you have been uploading Pub 2000 or even your
newer files as "index.html", then when you uploaded "index.htm" the original
index.html file would not be overwritten. If you have both an index.htm and
an index.html file then a browser would not know which file is the default.
Check to see if you have both. Check to see if you deleted your old Pub 2000
files. Remember that Pub 2000 did not use a subfolder to organize the
supporting images or additional pages, so those loose files should be
deleted from your site. Double check that you did indeed upload to the
Public_html folder. And finally, if you must, when you Publish to the Web,
choose index.html as your default instead of index.htm.

Once you figure out where to upload, and clean up your files on your host,
don't forget that you have to also upload the "index_files" folder that
Publisher generates when you Publish to the Web to the same Public_html
folder...or at the same level as the index.html or index.htm file. It sounds
like you forgot to do that, and that is where all your pictures and graphics
are stored as well as your other pages. Upload the folder intact...don't
upload the individual files.

Third...given that you have limited space available, be sure to compress
your images in your Pub file before you generate the html files/web pages.
Publisher 2000 automatically resized and reduced the resolution of inserting
images to the proper dimensions and 96 dpi when you "Saved as a Web Page".
Pub 2007 doesn't. Select one of the images on your Pub page and the picture
toolbar should appear. Mouseover the icons until you find the "Compress
pictures" function. Click it and in the dialog be sure to set the Target
Output to Web and apply the compression to all pictures.

You are almost there....

Off subject...Eastern Oregon? Which city if you don't mind me asking?

OH MY GOD!!!! IT WORKED, IT FREAKING WORKED!!!!!
You are a compu-GOD!
The issue was the difference between html and htm on the index folder so I
had to manually add the "L". It seems so weird to have had to go through all
this when it should have been so straight forward. the MHTML thing sent me
into a tail-spin that I've been working on for EVER!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! You can see the page...I think it is
actually posted now...(amateur that it is) at www.eoni.com/~wardc

And...I'm in La Grande, in Northeast Oregon...50 miles from Pendleton.
Small, rural.

Now...if you can help me figure out (after a year of troubleshooting) why I
can't install Flash Player to internet explorer, I can die happy. I've
uninstalled the old, reinstalled the new, checked the registry, stood on my
head, and whistled Dixie. I can install and use flash player on FireFox, but
not on IE in Vista. None of the "fixes" on the website, "fix" it.

And...why does Microsoft employ their tech support out of the country? Is
it India? Kind people, knowledgable people, they speak English, but not in a
way that I can understand it. So when you are already frustrated, and then
you hang out on hold, and then you speak with somebody you can't
understand...razor blades begin to call your name.

THANKS AGAIN! Cherrie

Cherrie,

Kewl! Glad it worked out for you.

If I read your reply correctly, you don't have to manually change .htm to
..html. You can choose the .html extension when you Publish to the Web...but
perhaps that is what you meant.

As per the Flash player, I can't help on that one. Post your question in the
IE newsgroup, or perhaps the Adobe newsgroup. I am sure someone there will
know the answer.

I live in Bend. Don, a frequent poster in this group lives in Tacoma Wa, so
there are several of us in the Pacific NW.

Uh, actually, I did change it manually. I'll have to look next time I revise
and save. I've printed your responses so I can recall the way back if I get
lost again. I really do appreciate your help. It's been hell. I'm not cut
out for this techy stuff, but am stubborn, determined and broke.

Bend is nice. Snow? We keep getting hammered over here. I have a niece in
Sisters, sister in Eugene, sister in Portland and other assorted relatives in
the area. I was born in Tacoma. Small world. Yeah, good times, kumbya :)

Thanks a TON! I'll try the adobe or IE sites for help with flash. AGAIN.
Sigh. Can't I just have what I want when I want it??? Is that too much to
ask?

When you Publish to the Web and get to the Save dialog, just be sure to save
as index.html instead of index.htm. That will also add the .html extension
to the other pages.

Snow? I have a couple feet of accumulation around my home that is starting
to melt finally. 20 minutes away Mt. Bachelor had around 150" of base now.
