how do I save ppt file to cd and automatically open when inserted?

W

willbarrow

I am using an apple mac running the latest version of powerpoint 2008. I need to save the presentation to cd. When the client inserts the cd into his pc (or mac) I would like the presentation to automatically start.

Any ideas anyone? I was hoping to find it in the newly purchased software.

Thanks Willbarrow.

Hi,

Due to security concerns Apple has removed the capability of CDs to
³autostart.² This means a program or file can not be told to run upon the
insertion of a CD or DVD. You have to take an action, except for video CDs
or DVDs. Windows still has this ability (Toast can create this
functionality, I think).

You can use PowerPoint¹s File > Save As and choose one of the two PowerPoint
Show formats (.ppsx for 2007 & 2008, pps for earlier versions). Your client
will have to have PowerPoint installed on his Mac and will need to
double-click the file to start the show. If you set up autostart for PC,
then it will play as soon as you insert the disc.

Alternatively, you can use PowerPoint¹s File > Make Movie feature
(animations will be ignored) which saves your presentation as a QuickTime
movie. Then use iMovie to make a disc that will play automatically when you
insert it.

And note that Windows users may have turned this feature (?) off as well.

It's always a good idea to include instructions with the cd (on the label or as
a separate sheet). Let the user know what they should do if the CD doesn't
autostart.
You can use PowerPoints File > Save As and choose one of the two PowerPoint
Show formats (.ppsx for 2007 & 2008, pps for earlier versions).

Probably safest to save as PPS no matter what, unless you're certain that your
target audience has 2007/2008.

If PPS isn't an option, save as .PPT and then change the extension to .PPS ...
same thing as saving as Show/PPS.

Your client

Will that work on Windows PCs? That was part of will's spec.

The autorun part, yep. But is it a QT movie or some other format?

If you use iDVD then the result is a playable movie disk, like the ones you
rent at Blockbuster.
