How do I Search .pub file contents in Vista?

R

R. C. White

How do I get Microsoft Publisher's .pub file contents to be included in
Vista's Search index?

The only time I've used Publisher was for the 3 years (7/1/2002-2005) when I
was editor of "The Spokesman", my local Rotary Club's weekly newsletter. I
have nearly 150 .pub files, each about 450 KB, all in my folder
E:\Rotary\The Spokesman.

When I click the Vista orb and type a Rotarian's name into the Search box, I
get a list of "hits" in Picture files and in emails, but .pub files are
never listed, even when I know that name is in many of them. How do I get
Vista's Search to find the name in those .pub files?

I've used Indexing Options, of course, and made sure that my data folder is
included. Also, under Advanced | File Types, I've set the .pub extension to
"Index Properties and File Contents"; the listing shows "Plain Text Filter"
in the Filter Description column.

What am I doing wrong - or not doing?

Vista is not compatible with .pub files
and can only search for the file name.

That's not true, John, I can search for .pub files and they all come up.

Yes, but Vista cannot index the contents of them, so searching for a
keyword that would only appear in the text of the publication would not
find them. Only a filename search. At least, that was the state of play
last time I checked.

Hi, John.

Thanks for your reply - even though I don't like it much. :>(

Is this based on your own experience, or have you seen an official statement
to this effect somewhere?

Hi, Ed.

Thanks for that information, even though I don't like it much.

This is not a critical issue for me. As I indicated, I'm no longer the
editor so I don't use Publisher now. And I can do a non-indexed search on
those few occasions when I really need to find something. But I'm very
curious as to why MS left this glaring omission in Search's abilities.

Maybe Mary can clarify how she handles the search.

Hi, Mary.

Thanks for the encouraging word. ;<)

Of course, that naturally brings up the next question: How?

As I told Ed, it's not a critical issue for me, but I would like to know how
to do it if it can be done.

That's new to me Mary...I can successfully search
for the file names but have no success searching
for words inside the files. How do you make it work?

You may have some success searching
within the files if you convert them to .pdf.

John,

What you suggested is true. I have approximately 20 .pub newsletters that
have also been converted to .pdf. The Vista search in Indexed Locations only
came up with the .pdf versions. (Vista Ultimate)

I had the same results.

Hi, John.

Thanks. Based on the comments from you and Charles, I'll think about
converting them to .pdf if I really need to search.
