How do I set margins?

To format an e-resume, I need to set my margins for a line length of
65 characters. How do I do that? Thanks in advance. BKB

Change your font to something monospace, such as Courier or Courier New.
Type some lines of text. Adjust the margins until you find the number
that gives you 65 characters in a line--you might count characters per
inch to see what margins to test first.

Sorry, no easy way to set this.

Dear BKB,

Unless you use a font in which each character is the same width, such as
Courier New (which don't look too good in résumés), you'll have to
approximate 65 characters.

My suggestion would be to colour every 65th character in a sample paragraph
(say about 10 such instances, i.e. 700-odd words), then set the margins via
Format menu => Document => Margins and refine the margin dimension till you
get the maximum number of lines with a coloured character at the end. Then
delete the sample text.

[Please note, if you're on a PC: The above comments assume you're using a
recent version of Word on a Macintosh. Some features in Mac versions are
different from the PC versions. If you're on a PC and landed here by
accident (which happens quite often: the interface is badly designed), you
may get a more appropriate answer from a discussion group for PC versions of
Word. Start here:

when posting mention your specific Word version.]

Hello,
well I have seen similar request in different group lately. But
honestly I cannot see the point of it. I guess this request has been
done by someone who has a little clue about PC/Mac publishing. The pre-
set amount of character per line was done in the past time when
typewriters have been used and they need to compare work, but most of
the page layout - word processing application do a big job by using
ligatures, kerning... resulting in various amount of character per
lines. Which is OK - just compare the old text on typewriter - where
the space for i an m was the same, how did the mi looked like?
awfully. And look, how WORD puts mi (if proportional font is used).
That's the reason - the typography why monospace characters are no
longer requested why we spent time with ligatures and kerning...

In the modern application allows you to count the typed characters.
Navigate to document >properties>statistics. So you can type freely
and then evaluate the amount of characters already typed. No need to
mess the typography and layout of document.

I do not blame you, I just said, that someone did misunderstood the
todays workflow of word processors and page layout application, as
from typography view this is senceless.
