How do I set references on open in a .dot file?

Still haven't figured this, that is how to set references
in a global .dot file (not normal.dot) on startup.
I would like to save the .dot file without the references and
set them when the .dot loads as that is the only way I can see
dealing with the situation where the referenced file has altered.
I have no problem doing this in Excel, but no succes yet in Word.

Are you talking about references such as are set by selecting References
from the Tools menu in the Visual Basic Editor or references to some other
sort of file?

Yes, that one, but I will have to do it programmatically. I know how to do
this, but
I can't make the .dot file do it when it opens/loads.

Is this not possible then?

Yes, late binding would be my last resort, but I am sure there must be a way
to do this.
I tried with the way I do this in Excel: a loaded .xla (ticked in Tools,
Add-ins) that opens
but not loads (as an add-in) another .xla. Sofar haven't got this working
yet though.
