How do I set task to be completed same day its started?

I have a number of small tasks that it just makes sense to pay the people an
hour of overtime to finish the job on the same day, rather than have Project
schedule it to be started one day and completed the next day. Is there a way
that I can set these specific tasks up so that Project will schedule them to
be completed the same day?

In any task View, such as the Gantt Chart view, click View - Table -
Tracking. Enter the start date in the Actual Start field and enter the
finish date in the Actual Finish field. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't see this as a viable option when trying to
schedule many future tasks. Some of our sites require a considerable travel
time, and having them completed the same day is necessary.

As an attempt to solve the problem, I've created a new calendar with
nondefault working time that is better aligned with the task durations that
I'm working with. I've also enabled "Scheduling ignores resource calendars",
and that seems to work. Any thoughts on what impact tweaking it this way may
have?

Hi

You could make these small tasks as 'Fixed duration' after assigning 1 day
duration to these tasks. For such activities either you could select this
option from Task information box or in Split window in the bottom.

I hope it helps

Another possibility is to assign overtime to each resource for the
appropriate task. 1 Hour overtime would be ignored by the schedule but
accounted for in the costs.

I think I misinterpreted your problem. I thought you were talking about how
to update progress for a task. Sorry.

That won't work. A 1-day, fixed duration task that starts later than the
start of the workday will still be split over two workdays. Remember, 1-day
duration does not mean the the task is only scheduled in full calendar day
increments. It means the duration is XXX minutes, the XXX being 480 minutes
with the default settings. The task can start and stop as many times as it
needs to accomodate intervening non-working time until 480 working time
minutes has been used up.

try changing those tasks to effort based, then alter the resource
working time to include the extra hour for that day, if it is close jus
assign them a couple extra hours to cover it. This should bring in you
finish date. Hope this helps.
