How do I set up balloons that appear where the cursor rests?

I have a document in Word 2003. I would like to insert information in
balloons that will appear when a student rests the cursor on a particular
word. I cannot remember if I have seen this in simply a word document but do
know I have seen it on internet sites so that may be the only way to do this.
Can anyone explain how to do this?

But now I get a username# inserted after the word. Microsoft help only tells
me how to change the username not how to get rid of it. I like the comment
box but don't want any marks in the text -- just for the box to come up when
the cursor goes over the word. Sorry to be difficult

Why not change the User Name and Initials to something like "Instructions"
and "I" or type a space in the text boxes?
