How do I set up notifier for e-mail?(MS Office Outlook 2007)

Hello,
I am runing MS Office Outlook 2007 on my WindowsXP.
Is there an e-mail notifier that will alert me when I receive incoming
e-mails?
Is there an option that will allow me to be notified by a desktop icon?
it is very annoying to have to keep opening and checking the programme for
mail.
Appreciate any help?

Outlook has to be open to receive mail, though it can be minimised to the
task bar
There is an Option, within Tools, to set a notification

New mail alerts should be on by default. To select again or turn off: Tools,
options, preferences, email options, advanced email options.

1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. On the Preferences tab, click E-mail Options, and then click Advanced
E-mail Options.
3. Under When new items arrive in my Inbox, clear the Display a New Mail
Desktop Alert (default Inbox only) check box.

A program can't do anything if it isn't running. Your choices are to
leave Outlook running (which I've never found Outlook, any version, to
be stable to do so unless you use only Exchange) or use a 3rd party
mail monitor, like Magic Mail Monitor, PopTray, ePrompter, or that
ilk.

In my case OL2003 has been stable for the last 2? years when left running
(pop config 8 accounts) Its only shutdown at night and the PC runs 24/7 &
has been stable for 3+ years, when it was last rebuilt.

Thank you for taking the trouble of responding to my question. I'm grateful
for your help. I have selected the relevant option.
I can't understand why MS don't integrate a more user friendly notifier into
Outlook.

Oh, so you *do* exit Outlook rather than leave it run 24/7.
