How do I setup a table that provides incremental number increases

I have already set up a table in Access. In my form I have it set up to
where I can choose from a list box in one field, what I would like for my
next field to do is add a corresponding letter (the first letter of the
choice from my list box) and automatically populate a five digit # (00001)
which is got from another table. My letternumber combinations have to be
sequential for each of my four choices in the list box. For example:

Document Type: Could be Tooling, Electrical, Pneumatic, or Facility
depending on which is chosen in the list box.

Document Number: Should be either T00001, E00001, P00001, or F00001, with
each one increasing one increment any time a new record is entered for that
particular document type.

Please don't say that this information is redundant, I need for it to be set
up this way! Can anyone please help me, I would be incredibly grateful?

Hi Kyla,

I won't say that it is redundant; it is, however, known as an "Intelligent
Key", which should not be taken as a compliment.

Try a Google Advanced search for Intelligent Key. Here is a set of results
for author=John Vinson (an Access MVP). You will likely find the answer among
the various threads in this result set. If not, widen your search by removing
the author name:

Can you help me to figure this out? I know now exactly what needs to be
done, but I need help with the formulas.
