How do I share a notebook from backed up network?

Hello,

I have a question regarding sharing notebooks between work PC and home PC. I
have read several threads and web pages recommending storing the notebooks on
a USB drive (e.g.
http://blogs.msdn.com/david_rasmussen/archive/2006/06/29/650705.aspx ),
however this method does not address my question.

I work on two computers which are not connected and have no shared storage
space apart from a USB drive. My work network space is backed up nightly, so
ideally i would like my notebooks to reside there. How can I work on my
notebooks at home as well as at work, whilst ensuring the core notebooks
(i.e. not the cached versions) are able to be backed up by the network?

Any help greately appreciated!

Hmmm, that sounds as though i might make mistakes and get myself in trouble.
I don't fully understand your suggestion here:
"You can restore the cached file, open OneNote without the USB stick
inserted and then simply save the notebooks you want to individually, or save
them back to a new USB stick".

Is this advice on how to restore the cached file? please could you explain
again which notebooks i should save to where?

This sounds like a bit of a workaround for me, because 95% of the time i'm
working from my work network files. With other software i just sync the data
files i need to my USB drive and work on them at home. I've read that you
shouldn't do this with OneNote. If this is the case, what happens if i just
copy the OneNote notebooks to my USB, work on them at home, then overwrite
the network files when i come back into work? - i.e. not using syncing
software.

You could go with just having the cache being backed up, as you can restore
anything from the cache as well. You can restore the cached file, open
OneNote without the USB stick inserted and then simply save the notebooks
you want to individually, or save them back to a new USB stick.

Well, the odds of losing the core notebook on the USB stick AND the
Cached files on the respective PCs seems slight but...

If I were you I'd probably use something like SyncToy
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...36-98e0-4ee9-a7c5-98d0592d8c52&DisplayLang=en)
to synchronize (separately from OneNote) your core notebook files from
the USB drive to some specially created folder on your work network
space that would get backed up.

For instance, create a folder in your work network space called "OneNote
Backups" and just use SyncToy to copy the files from the USB drive to
that folder. It would be relatively trivial to copy them the other way
if you ever lose the files on that USB drive (or the entire USB drive)
and all of your cached copies as well.

Ok, Thank you both.

I already use SyncToy, and find it to be a pretty good tool. I think my
question has now been answered:

Sorry, one more question:

Please could you advise how to transfer my current ON folders from my
desktop to a usb drive, and enable them to be accessed from both computers.
When i tried this last time i ended up with a read only file.

Many thanks

Tom
