how do I show the verticle ruler?

You have to be in Normal view to see it.

Given that, go to Tools > Options > View tab and check "Vertical Ruler".

On the View tab of Tools | Options, check the box for "Vertical ruler." The
View | Ruler command will then toggle this along with the horizontal ruler,
but note that the vertical ruler is displayed only in Print Layout view (not
in Normal, Web Layout, or Outline view).
