how do I shut off the editing? It is SO ANNOYING!

Help! I cannot stand all of the symbols, they are very distracting. How do
I SHUT THEM OFF.

Click the ¶ button on the Standard toolbar (or Home tab of the ribbon, if
this is Word 2007).
