How do I speed up excell calculations

I have Excell 2003. When I work with large spreadsheets with lookup tables
and if statements it can take several minuets to recalulate every time i make
an entry, after 3 or 4 recalulations the spreadsheet hangs up. Is there any
way I can speed this up.

Lookups and Ifs are the slowest thing you can use. There may be other
alternatives to them, but you will need to supply some examples of what you
have. Either that or look to 'fix' some of the calculations.

Often while developing ad-hoc spreadsheets, you can make calcs on calcs on
calcs. You can convert those that will no longer need to change to values
using Edit>paste special... values
