How do I split the state of Illinois in half?

I'm trying to split the shape of the State of Illinois in half and can't
figure it out. Does anyone know how to do this?

That won't work. Just use a scissors and cut the shape in half! More
kidding.

Place Illinois on your drawing page. Surround the section of the state that
you want to modify, eliminate, or whatever. Select both objects, and then
(toolbar)>Shapes>Operations>Fragment. That should yield the entire state,
plus a single identified region as outlined by the rectangle. Delete that
rectangle, and you should see a divided state. Each region is individually
identifiable.

to modify with a rectangle. Select both shapes and then fragment.
