how do I stop archiving and how do I retrieve archived e-mails?

disable it in tools, options, other tab and open the archive folder using
file, open, outlook data file.

Tools | Options | Other tab ... autoarchive

search for a (possibly hidden) file usually called archive.pst. Open it and
copy the items over or just access it as needed.
