How do I stop CPU hitting 100%?

Every time I click the review tab it becomes almost impossible to type
normally or to do anaything as I normally would. With the Review tab selected
CPU hits 99% - 100% and I cant seem to do anything to resolve this problem.
With any of the other tabs CPU idles and everything works as normal with
WINWORD.EXE using between 0% and 10% of CPU. Why does this happen? Is this a
universal problem? How do I stop it? Please help? I am using the trial
edition if that makes a difference. Word version 12.0.4518.1014.

Are Track Changes enabled in this document? Is this the same for all
documents or just this one document? Have you got a default printer driver
installed and set to Windows default?

This is the same for all documents - even when I open a blank new document. A
default printer is installed although at a network location - however this
has never caused me any problems with other office 2007. Track changes is not
enabled. Thanks for the responce. I have tried diagnostics reinstalling -
everything. Any suggestions?

Most peculiar. Try the following:

1. Start Word in Safe Mode by using Start, Run (or Winkey+R) and type in

winword /a

and press enter. Are you able to use the Review tab now?

2. Find normal.dotx and rename it normal.bad. Restart Word and test again.

3. Find Building Block.dotx (in your user profile) and delete it. Restart
Word and test again.

4. Go to File, Print and select Microsoft Office Printer driver as the
active printer. Now try the Review menu again. Does that work?

Please let me know how these tests go and if any resolve the problem (even
if just temporarily).

I tried all your suggestions... No difference. My Laptop is pretty good
though so I can't see it being my laptop as the issue. The next thing I
thought was maybe a hardware conflict. I uninstalled the other printers and
left only the document image writer and disconnected from the wireless
network. This had no effect. I would love to know what Word is doing with the
CPU. What calculations is it doing? When the review tab is selected what does
it do that it doesnt do on any of the other tabs?

Thanks for your help. If I cant get this sorted I will not be buying it
after the trial has run out.

What I find really strange is that it does this in a blank document. And
because CPU is pretty much at max when I type their is a good few seconds
delay before I see the result on the screen!

Do you know what calculations Word does when the review tab is selected that
is different from all other tabs?

I have absolutely no idea why this is happening. Selecting the Review tab is
just the same as selecting any other tab from the ribbon: until you select a
command, it is just a menu. If it was a software conflict, then starting in
Safe Mode would have worked. Try completely uninstalling Office 2007 and
then reinstall and see if that resolves the problem.

It really is bizarre. Corrupt proofing tools have been known to cause 100%
CPU, but proofing is active in the background all the time regardless of
which Ribbon tab is selected. And in these examples, there's nothing to
check anyway.

I suggest finding and deleting your normal.dotx and find the Building
Blocks.dotx (in your user profile) and renaming them as normal.bad and
BB.bad.

New Development.. I tried what you said. Didnt make a difference. When I
restart my computer in safe mode the problem does NOT occur. When starting
word in safe mode however it does. When the whole computer is in safe mode
and I run word CPU usage on the review tab is normal. Does this suggest its a
software conflict? I've uninstalled every piece of software I do not consider
essential but still the problem persists.

Software conflict seem likely but most likely it is a hardware driver as
these are not loaded in Windows Safe Mode but are loaded on Word Safe Mode.
From this result, the graphics would seem my first suspicion - but I would
feel much more confident IF I could fathom out what would be the trigger to
this on the Reviewing Toolbar.
