How do I stop Frontpage 2003 from saving my html files to my desk.

How do I stop Frontpage 2003 from saving my html files to my desk.top? Every
time I go to work on my web pages, I save and close them and then my default
browser icon appears on my desktop with the filename and a folder also
appears on my desktop with the same folder name. Each file I work on gets
saved in pairs on my desktop. How do I get it to stop? Please help soon.

1. Do you have a web open when this happens??
2. If 1 is true, is a copy also saved in the web??

No web is open when this happens. Note: I have four browsers on my WindowsXP
system, IE6, Mozilla, Netscape and Opera. When I did my work in FP and my
default browser was Mozilla, after saving my file I would notice pairs of
Mozilla icons and yellow folders with the file name I saved. When I switched
my default to Netscape, I would get Netscape icons and yellow folderes on my
desktop.

There must be some setting somewhere that I just can't find.

You need to work on web pages with a web opened in FrontPage, and not just a page.
Without a web open, FrontPage has no clue where to save the content so it saves it to the last place
a file was opened from.
*Always,* open FrontPage, open a web ( File > Open Web ) and then open a page to work on it.

I believe I'm doing that already. I open Frontpaage 2003 >File > Open Site >
ArtCellar.net Are you saying I need to open up a browser in addition to
Frontpage?
Thanks

S

Steve Easton

No, not a browser. Just a web site in FrontPage.
If you are opening FrontPage, then a web, then a page, the next time you save a page, select: File >
Save as, and then Browse to the location of the web you have opened. This will reset the default
save location FrontPage uses for "that" web.

If that doesn't work, close all webs and run detect and repair from the Help Drop down on the
FrontPage toolbar.

Or you can clear some registry entries if you're comfortable doing that.

Before I try a detect and repair please let me explain one more thing that
I've noticed. I've been working with inserting interactive buttons on my web
pages. Now when I'm working on a page on my web site, say gifts.htm I
deleted an interactive button on the bottom of the page in order to make a
new one. Once I pressed the delete button, I saw the two icons go onto my
desktop (Netscape labelled gifts.htm and yellow folder labelled gifts_files.)

I tried another page on my site and double clicked an interactive button in
order to view its properties. When I clicked "ok" I saw the icons go onto my
desktop again.

Maybe it's has some connection with the interactive buttons?

Sincerely,
Tessie

Yes, I'm launching FP from a shortcut on my desktop. No change if I launch
it from Start | Programs.

Some how you have set the desktop folder as the default folder for FP
- usually because FP remembers your last save to folder
- or because your FP web was created in your desktop folder
(what is the file path to your disc based web?)
If working in a web open it,
Open a page and use File Save as
Browse to the folder you want to use
- should be your currently open web, or if not working in a web a folder in My Documents
Your next save should be to the same location (FP should remember it)

As I can recall this seemed to start happening when I installed the other
browsers (Netscape, Mozilla Firefox & Opera) onto my laptop.

My FP web was not created in the desktop folder.

My web lives in the following path: C:\Documents and Settings\Nancy\My
Documents\My Web Suites\ArtCellar.net

I've done the "Save As" right into my ArtCellar.net web site in the
Frontpage program.

Any morre thoughts? Anyone?

Using FrontPage rename your web folder to simply ArtCellar
The .net is the problem as it makes FrontPage see it as a file and not a root "folder" for a web.

Well, I changed the filename from ArtCellar.net to ArtCellarNet This did
not fix the problem.

Let me explain again what's happening here: I go into my web site (now
entitled ArtCellarNet) after opening frontpage. I then open one of my pages,
say, science.html . I scroll down to the bottom of the page where I have
created an interactive button with the name "HOME" on it. I double-click it
to see it's parameters and then click "ok". This is when the two icons
appear on my desktop (a yellow follow entitled science_files, and a Netscape
icon entitled science.html .

It appears that this desktop problem is somehow related to the interactive
buttons.

I'm so frustrated. I just can't figure this out. Thanks for your time and
patience everyone.

You have some system issues.
I would open FrontPage, but don't open an webs and then click Help and on the drop down click Detect
and Repair.
Running detect and repair will *not* harm your website.
