How do I stop my page numbers being displayed in code?

When I opened a Word document from a colleague, it changed my settings so
that many things, including page numbers, are shown as code, e.g. {page
\*MERGEFORMAT}. Previously, I changed it back by pressing ALT + F9 but that
doesn't seem to work now. How do I change the display back?

If you have Word 2003 or earlier, then in Word click on Tools |
Options | View tab | uncheck the boxes for "All", "Hidden text",
and "Field codes" | Print tab | uncheck the boxes for "Hidden
text" and "Field codes" | OK.

You selected the field and pressed Shift+F9 and nothing happened? If so,
check the keyboard shortcut assignments.

Click on the "pizza button" [MS Office button], Word Options, Advanced tab,
scroll down to the "Show document content" section, and make sure the box
next to "Show field codes instead of their values" is UNchecked. (I
accidentally reset this with a random keystroke the other day and had the
same thing happen to me; when I went into this window, I found that "Show
field codes" box had been checked. I unchecked it and the problem went away.)
