How do I stop my pictures from being blank boxes while I write?

I accidently turned on a formatting where any picture I place in an e-mail is
a blank object but when it is sent, then the picture returns. This is
probably a simple fix but I seem to be overlooking the answer. Please help.

Hi,
In the open message or in Word click Tools
Options
View tap
under "Show" uncheck "Picture Placeholders"
and O.K.
