how do I stop my word documents automatically saving in .rtf

Every time I make a word document it automatically saves in a wordpad
document. I already checked the settings and it should save in .doc format
as a default. Why is word saving my papers as wordpad documents? And how
can I fix it?

If you use file > save as, what is the file format selected? If RTF change
it to Word Document. If it is already Word document, the file association in
Windows is wrong - see
