How do I stop prompts to save an unchanged document?

I'm using Word 2003. If I open a document created by a previous Word version,
then close it without making any changes, I am still prompted:

Do you want to save the changes to XXXXX

Even if I save the document from Word 2003, this prompt always happens next
time I open and close it!

Although the article mentions Word 2002, I suspect that it would be
relevant for Word 2003 as well.

Another thing to consider: if the document contains fields that are
updated on opening, or OLE links, it is normal to see a prompt.

It means some change is, in fact happening. Usually means that the document
contains a field that automatically updates, like a DATE field.

It works, to a point - I wish I could just remove any reference to Smart
Tags from my computer!
I see from the list of problems that this one is a biggie for many people
(strangely, my serach of the forum didn't find all these other posts.)
Microsoft take note?

Are there any fields at all? Note that if there are fields, there are

This is due to a damage in the Normal.doc. Search for the Normal.doc
template in word (you may need to go to control panel/folder
options/view and select show hidden files and folders). Open the
Normal.doc and hit save.
