How do i stop punctuation marks creating bold txt

Every time i use a punctuation mark (whether it be a question mark, quotes,
commas etc) the entire line from the point of the mark onwards becomes bold
and fuzzy when printed in colour. It is not the printers we are using, so it
must have something to do with the program language. I have tried removing
smart formatting, but this did not solve the problem as I suspected it would!
