How do I stop the cursor from jumping to similar text on the page?

I have Windows XP and as I type the cursor jumps to a similar letter
elsewhere in the text. If I am not watching I type away in the middle of
another sentence. How do I get this to stop?

Barbara:

If you are typing in Word, one function that makes the cursor seem to jump
ahead to the letter you type is Extend Selection. Can you see the status bar
a the bottom of your Word window? the letters EXT should be disabled (grayed
out) for normal use. If they are dark, you've entered Extend Selection mode.
Just press Esc. The next problem would be to find out why you're entering
that mode. Pressing F8?
