how do I stop the view from centering while drawing?

I'm using the drawing features and zooming in to 500%. Whenever I click on
an object I have drawn, the screen re-centers forcing me to scroll back to
the area I was working on. How do I turn off the auto-centering features
while working on drawings (close-up).

There's nothing you can do to change how Word does this, I'm afraid...
