I don't want the French speller and the Outlokk update fails. so how do I

The updates through http://officeupdate.com are intended to keep the entire purchased Office product complete and current, not just
the presently selected features/subset.
French, English and Spanish proofing tools are included
in the Office XP and 2003 product CDs for the English Language editions.
To 'hide' any of the recommended updates you can use
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate which provides both Windows and
Office XP/2003 updates, rather than http://officeupdate.com
