How do I stop Word 2002 from shutting down for no reason?

I load a document; I work on it for a short while; I leave the workstation
for a few minutes, so screen saver is running (Windows XP-SP2); I move the
mouse to restore my screen, and voila! Word closes without explanation.
Just closes. Reload Word--no error message, no document retrieval...nothing.
Sometimes this happens right after I load the document, too. Word sits with
the "hour glass" icon for a minute or so, and then closes every document. It
can take me two or three tries to get this to stop. I've searched for
updates--my services are up-to-date. I've done the detect and repair. I'm
one step short of reinstallation. Any thoughts on a better solution?
