How do I stop Word from inserting a capital I don't want?

Word always assumes, when I begin typing immediately after a period, that my
first letter should be a capital. I do not always want it to be, e.g. when
I am writing footnotes or when I am quoting. How do I tell Word to stop
doing my thinking for me?

In Word, click on Tools | AutoCorrect Options | AutoCorrect tab | uncheck the
"Capitalize first letter of sentences" box | OK.
